Product Description: The Wassily Chair (1925) was inspired by a mid nineteenth century folding
chair used by the British army officers on campaign in India.
Known simply as the 'Colonial Chair', the elegant simplicity of this
predecessor has been subtly preserved although the Wassily has a
completely different aesthetic effect, and affords a much more generous, and relaxing seat.
Although the lines of the "Colonial's" tilted seat and
canted back, are still to be seen in the Wassily, Breuer has created
something shockingly modern for the 1920s, and utterly futuristic even by
today's standards. This humble design, continuously elevated by
international acclaim, remains a timeless example of functional art. It
seems to have lost none of its startling revolutionary appeal after more than
three quarters of a century, and remains an endearing and enduring icon.
Its tubular steel frame supports a veritable cat's cradle of leather
strapping and one can only imagine Kandinsky's (for whom it was designed)
