The Red and Blue chair is a three dimensional exploration of geometric balance and color. Designed at a time when Rietveld was working closely with the famous modern artist - Mondrian, we can see quite clearly the influence of both Mondrian and the de Steil school (of which Rietveld and Mondrian were both members).

Rietveld was actively seeking to design a piece of fine art, that used these new principles, but was simple enough to be mass produced and therefore affordable for a larger audience.

There have also been some suggestions that hidden within its simple lines, the chair also contains more complex symbolic messages. Philosophical quodlibet meets accessible modern art, and functional form. The Red and Blue chair is much more than just an exceptional piece of modern furniture, its an intellectual statement and a great conversation piece
