Eco Friendly Modern Furniture:

Eco Friendly Modern Furniture:

There are many ways in which a piece of furniture can qualify as, and be manufactured in, an eco friendly manner:

There are a great many aspects of 'Green & Sustainable' manufacturing.

One might say that manufacturers who perform their administrative functions in a environmentally sensitive manner
are contributing to the making of a 'Green' product.

These are all important ways to reduce our impact on the planet.

The truth is that no SINGLE one of these measures is sufficent to justify the labels 'Green', 'Sustainable' or 'Eco-friendly'.

For this reason we have proposed to our manufacturers that they provide us with information about each of the issues described above, so that we might provide you with this data, to better make your buying decisions with environmental awareness.

We are looking for good modern furniture design that are manufactured by people with a real claim to the title 'Green & Sustainably Manufactured'.

We recognize that this is a high bar to set, and in truth we expect only a few of our manufacturers to rank well at first.  It is however our sincere hope that simply by asking these questions we will encourage them to think more seriously about the subject, and to perhaps explore the potential for creative solutions to their sustainability issues.

Over the next few weeks we will be publishing short corporate case studies presenting this information as they arrive.

We hope that by publishing information about the inspiring actions and choices that some brave souls are making, we will encourage you to support these companies by buying their products and by telling your friends about them too.

And perhaps we will also inspire you to look for creative ways to become even more "Green", yourself.

Do you use recycled materials?
No

Where do your recycled materials come from ?
N/A

As far as wood frame materials are concerned we hardwood lumber
and engineered panel boards (such as OSB {oriented strand board} and
plywood). The lumber used is harvested according to strict Canadian
and American logging requirements that ensure reforestation planting
occurs.  Panel boards are environmentally friendly as they maximize
the use of lumber by using waste strips of wood from mills.

Typically from the Great Lakes forest region and Alberta/BC

Yes!  We try to eliminate any hazardous materials from both our
process and our final product.

Polyurethane foams - our padding/cushion foam material is
produced without harmful CFC's, volatile organic compounds
(VOCs), or brominated compounds (PBDE's).  A certain percentage of
foams now contain soy based polyols replacing petrochemicals.

Frames - We use only North American produced plywood and OSB.
These materials are made by glueing waste wood together into boards.
Our material uses phenolic adhesive which does not contain unstable
formaldehyde avoiding the possibility of harmful emissions in the
home.

Glue - all glue used in production is water based latex
adhesive.  Because it is water based, it is safe for our workers
and eliminates  odours and emissions in the home associated with solvent
(VOC) based adhesives.

Yes

No

Yes as safety permits.

Is the manufacturing done in an energy efficient way?
Yes.

Whenever possible we do buy locally, however most cover
materials such as leather and fabrics come from overseas.  Leather is
typically sourced in South America and Europe, and fabrics mostly
originate from Asia.

That depends on the destination but we are located within 2
hours of boarding crossings to the US via New York State.

Yes!  We sell all scrap leather cuttings to companies that make
smaller leather products such as belts, cell phone cases etc.  Scrap
foam and polyester fibre is also collected and sold.

Lind Furniture is committed to making quality, environmentally
friendly upholstered products.  We strive to make our workplace safer
for our employees, our products safer for consumers, and the air we
breath cleaner, by sourcing and demanding materials that respect the
environment.

Yes 100% sustainable bamboo. Bamboo is one of the earth's fastest growing plants and it is a grass that grows to maturity in 5 years or less.

China

We do use adhesives in the manufacturing process, however, the adhesives used in manufacturing our products have very low VOC levels.

In fact, the formaldehyde levels are well lower than the Europe Standard, US Standard, as well as the California standards.

Currently no, but looking at that in future catalogs

Yes. Our factories are ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 14001 Environment Management certificated factory.

Carbon Sequestering - Bamboo is the one of best plants on earth for sequestering carbon. It releases about 35 percent more oxygen than comparable hardwood trees. By sequestering carbon, it reduces the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, said to be a main factor in global warming.   Again, our bamboo is harvested from forests which are 100%  fully sustainable, environmentally friendly and is a rapidly growing renewable resource.
